How Browser-Based Screen Recording Works

Toolkiya's screen recorder uses the browser's built-in Screen Capture API (getDisplayMedia) to record your screen, a specific window, or a browser tab. The recording is encoded in real-time using the MediaRecorder API with VP9 or VP8 codec, depending on browser support.

The entire recording process happens locally in your browser — no video data is uploaded to any server. When you stop recording, the video file is saved as a WebM file that you can download immediately. You can optionally include system audio and microphone input for narrated recordings.

When to Use Screen Recording

Creating software tutorials and how-to videos. Recording bug reports and technical issues for development teams. Capturing online lectures, webinars, and presentations for later review. Recording gameplay and streaming highlights. Creating product demos and walkthrough videos for clients or team members.

Why Record Your Screen with Toolkiya

Desktop screen recorders like OBS, Loom, and Camtasia require installation and often limit recording time or add watermarks in free tiers. Loom's free plan caps recordings at 5 minutes and requires an account.

Toolkiya's screen recorder runs entirely in your browser with no installation, no account, no time limit, and no watermark. Recordings are saved locally as WebM files — your screen content is never uploaded to any server. It works on any desktop browser that supports the Screen Capture API.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is my recording uploaded anywhere?

No. Recording happens entirely in your browser using the MediaRecorder API. Nothing is ever sent to a server.

What browsers are supported?

Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Safari (latest versions). Screen capture requires HTTPS and user permission.

Can I record audio?

Yes. You can include microphone audio and, on Chrome/Edge, system/tab audio via screen-share.

What format is the output?

WebM (VP9 or VP8) — plays in all modern browsers and converts easily to MP4 with tools like ffmpeg or our other converters.

How long can I record?

Until you click Stop. There's no hard limit, but very long recordings use memory — keep it under ~30 minutes for best results.
