Rent Receipt Format for HRA Claim — Free Template (2026)
If you receive House Rent Allowance (HRA) as part of your salary and live in a rented house, you can claim a tax exemption under Section 10(13A) of the Income Tax Act. But your employer will ask for rent receipts as proof. Here is everything you need to know about the correct format and how to generate them instantly.
When Are Rent Receipts Required?
Under Indian income tax rules, you must submit rent receipts to your employer if your monthly rent exceeds Rs 3,000. Even if your rent is below this threshold, it is good practice to maintain receipts for your records. Most companies collect rent receipts during the January-March investment declaration window. Without valid receipts, your employer will not process the HRA exemption and you will end up paying more tax.
What Must a Rent Receipt Include?
A valid rent receipt for HRA purposes must contain the following details:
- Tenant name — Your full name as per PAN card.
- Landlord name — Full legal name of the property owner.
- Landlord PAN — Mandatory if annual rent exceeds Rs 1,00,000.
- Rental address — Complete address of the rented property.
- Rent amount — Monthly rent in figures and words.
- Payment period — The month and year the receipt covers.
- Revenue stamp — Required if rent is paid in cash (Rs 1 stamp for receipts above Rs 5,000).
- Landlord signature — Must be signed by the landlord or authorised person.
HRA Exemption Rules — Section 10(13A)
The HRA exemption is the minimum of the following three amounts:
- Actual HRA received from your employer.
- 50% of basic salary if you live in a metro city (Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, or Kolkata), or 40% for non-metro cities.
- Actual rent paid minus 10% of your basic salary.
For example, if your basic salary is Rs 30,000, you receive Rs 15,000 as HRA, and you pay Rs 12,000 in rent in a non-metro city, the exemption would be: minimum of Rs 15,000, Rs 12,000 (40% of 30,000), and Rs 9,000 (12,000 minus 3,000). You can claim Rs 9,000 per month as tax-exempt. Use our financial calculators for detailed computations.
