Aadhaar Card Photo Size and Specifications (2026 Guide)

Getting your Aadhaar photo rejected is frustrating, especially when you have already waited in a long queue at the enrolment centre. This guide covers the exact photo specifications UIDAI requires so you can prepare a perfect photo at home before your visit.

Official Aadhaar Photo Specifications

ParameterRequirement
Photo Size3.5 cm x 4.5 cm (passport size)
Pixel Dimensions413 x 531 pixels (at 300 DPI)
File FormatJPEG / JPG
File Size20 KB to 100 KB
BackgroundPlain white or light-coloured
DPIMinimum 300 DPI
Face Coverage70-80% of the frame

Common Reasons for Photo Rejection

  • Blurry or out of focus — The camera must be steady and the face clearly visible. Avoid zooming in on a low-resolution photo.
  • Wrong background — Dark, patterned, or cluttered backgrounds get rejected. Use a plain white wall or sheet.
  • Face too small or too large — Your face should fill 70-80% of the frame. A selfie taken at arms length often leaves too much empty space.
  • Shadows on face — Stand facing a window or use soft, even lighting. Avoid harsh overhead lights that cast shadows under the eyes and nose.
  • File size too large — Photos straight from a smartphone camera are usually several megabytes. You need to compress them below 100KB.
  • Wearing sunglasses or hat — Religious headwear is permitted, but sunglasses and caps are not allowed.

How to Prepare Your Aadhaar Photo at Home

  1. Take a photo — Stand against a plain white wall. Use your phone rear camera (not selfie camera) held by someone else at eye level. Use natural daylight from a nearby window.
  2. Crop and resize — Open Toolkiya Aadhaar Photo Tool. Upload your photo. The tool automatically crops to the correct 3.5x4.5 cm ratio and resizes to 413x531 pixels.
  3. Check and adjust — Use the preview to make sure your face is centred and fills the recommended area. Adjust the crop if needed.
  4. Download — The tool outputs a JPEG file within the required 20-100KB range. Save it to your phone or computer for use at the enrolment centre.

Tips for Online Aadhaar Updates

If you are updating your Aadhaar details online through the UIDAI portal, the same photo specifications apply. Make sure your uploaded photo meets the size and format requirements before submitting. The portal will reject files that exceed 100KB or use a non-JPEG format. Using Toolkiya, you can also compress the image to the exact kilobyte limit required. Processing happens entirely in your browser, so your personal photo never gets uploaded to any third-party server.

Aadhaar Photo vs Passport Photo

While both are commonly called passport-size photos, there are subtle differences. Aadhaar follows the standard Indian passport photo size (3.5x4.5 cm), but the UIDAI is more flexible about expression compared to passport authorities. A slight smile is acceptable for Aadhaar. For Indian passport photos specifically, check our passport photo size guide.
